The purpose of the education
- To give students exhaustive knowledge of the musical theater/musical and the different genres.
- To bring students to a professional level in singing, dancing and acting, thereby giving them the opportunity to claim themselves both nationally and internationally.
The Danish Academy of Musical Theatre is a higher educational institution. Our program is full-time and students are obliged to attend all classes. Tests, exams and productions are scheduled on fixed dates during the course.
The classes will focus on the aspects of solo- and ensemble work. The program is highly concentrated, demanding and offers great challenges when it comes to creativity, self-dependence, team spirit and endurance.
Apart from the daily classes the students will be offered to participate in seminars, master classes, courses and different types of exchange programs. The students will also have the opportunity to participate in Fredericia Theater´s annual production of a major musical in collaboration with top professional performers on and behind the stage.
Both Danish and foreign professionals within the different fields, perform the teaching.
The course also includes periods of vocational experience. During these periods the students will be able to gain real experience by participating in different musical productions both internally and on other professional stages in other parts of Denmark.
The Danish Academy of Musical Theatre picks out a number of qualified students based on the results of the entrance examination.
The program
All courses and productions take place in Fredericia on the premises of the academy or at Fredericia Theater. The Danish Academy of Musical Theatre admits a maximum of 15 students per year. In general applicants should be between 16 and 30 years of age. Dispensation can be granted in some cases.
It is a three-year full-time program that ends with a final examination. The educational year stretches from September (week 36) to June (week 26) and consists of 36 weeks.
The tuition fee is 26.000 DKK per year payable in two yearly installments of 13.000 DKK.
The Danish Ministry of Education recognizes The Danish Academy of Musical Theatreas an official Danish educational institution. It is therefore possible for students to apply for the State Education Grant and Loan Scheme (Danish acronym: SU).
First Year
Apart from lessons in solo singing, dancing, acting techniques, theatrical theory, drama workshops etc. it is, all ready on the first year, possible to attend master classes taught by Danish as well as international artists and teachers.
At the end of the educational year each class performs their own musical drama performance in front of an audience at Fredericia Theater.
Second and Third Year
You will be an active participant, both as a soloist and in different types of ensembles in the above-mentioned master classes taught by top professional artists such as: Ian Adam (Stage and Vocal Director), Lisa Kent (Director and choreographer from London), Cathrine Sadolin (voice theory) and other capacities from the musical world.
In the final year teaching of artistic subjects, performance, and practical subjects will be more comprehensive than earlier.
The second and third year will see the addition of subjects such as: production knowledge, make-up, masking and costuming as well as sponsorship knowledge, merchandising and promotion etc. There will be a focus on exchange programs in collaboration with international schools of music, national schools of acting and other national musical productions and theaters.
The academy will arrange two annual student evaluations.
The third year will end with a final exam that will be graded by internal as well as external censors approved by The Danish Ministry of Education.The Danish Academy of Musical Theatre will issue a leaving certificate.
